Dr David Breakstone:  Dancing 'round Herzl's grave

Dear Dr. Herzl,

Happy Birthday. I hope you enjoyed the party we threw you the other night. I'm fairly certain you did. Despite that effort of yours to maintain an eternally stern expression and penetrating gaze, I believe I caught a fleeting smile cross your lips at one point during the celebration, and, if I am not mistaken (don't worry, I won't tell a soul) there was even a moment when tears clouded your eyes.

Being Patriotic in Israel:  In the Path of the Founding fathers?

Given the devaluation of the Zionist identity in recent years, the persistence for defining Israel as "the home of the Jewish people, its historic bastion, the homeland of our people" is not to be taken for granted. However, without it, Israel will not be able to survive for very long as a Jewish state, as it was envisioned by the founding fathers from the labor movement. [Full article...]

Ideology:  The Message of Labour Zionism

Labor Zionism represents a particular vision of Jewish destiny- a free nation, building a just society and safeguarding it. Jewish national freedom and social justice are the poles of our doctrine, our point of departure, our destination. The relationship and union between these two values, at times the tensions or contradictions, and, in the final resort, the balance between them, mark the ideological and political course of Labor Zionism in a period of revolutionary change. In Historical Context:  Zionism and the Upheavals of the 20th Centery

Hagshama - Article III:  The Relevance of Zionism Today

The World Zionist Congress opens on the seventeenth of June, 2002… and there is no way of predicting what the situation will be in either the Middle East or in the World. What is clear, is that if the Congress does not involve serious ideological debate on relevant Zionism, those who claim the World Zionist Organisation and our National Zionist Institutions are obselete will gain the upper hand by default. There is a vital need to re-examine our expressions of Zionism and ensure that our ongoing Zionist goals, actions and ideals are meeting the demands and challenges of the 21st Century. A vital need to rejuvenate and revitalize the Zionist Movement. [Full article...]

Nature of Nationalism:  Herzl's Butlers

James Cook misled the British government back home by neglecting to report about the aborigines he spotted on the beaches of New Holland. This convenient omission allowed him to claim the territory for the crown. In the subsequent waves of colonization, the aborigines perished. Modern Australia stands awash in their blood, constructed on their graves, thriving on their confiscated lands. The belated efforts to redress these wrongs meet with hostility and the atavistic fears of the dispossessor. In "Altneuland" (translated to Hebrew as "Tel Aviv"), the feverish tome composed by Theodore Herzl, Judaism's improbable visionary - Herzl refers to the Arabs as pliant and compliant butlers, replete with gloves and tarbushes. In the book, a German Jewish family prophetically lands at Jaffa, the only port in erstwhile Palestine. They are welcomed and escorted by "Briticized" Arab gentlemen's gentlemen who are only too happy to assist their future masters and colonizers to disembark. In between these extremes -of annihilation and assimilation - modern Europe has come up with a plethora of models and solutions to the question of minorities which plagued it and still does. Two schools of thought emerged: the nationalistic-ethnic versus the cultural. [Full article...]

ZIONISM differs from other national Liberation movements:  Zionism: The National Liberation Movement of The Jewish People
